Battery - Lemon, Potato, Beer, etc?

I'm after information on the internet on batteries powered by lemons, potatoes, beer and all soughts of other things. I'm after info on how they work, scientific explanation, etc. I haven't managed the find anything. Could someone please help me. Best answer - 10pts

Answer:
the probes you use( positive negative) whether they are iron or copper, aluminum etc. all have a negative or positive polarity. In a acid or base solution( lemon potato or beer) the acid reacts with a metal creating a negative or postiive ion which propigates to the probe creating a simple battery
a potato is a base solution, a lemon is an acid solution

I made a battery instead of the transformer I was making but it didn't work too good or I should say it worked too good. I think I could make it work if I go back to trying though. More info at http://www.geocities.com/tired94302... my website.
