What are the limitations of sublimation?

organic chemistry

Answer:
However, for some elements or substances at some pressures the material may transition directly from solid to the gaseous state. Note that the pressure referred to here is the vapor pressure of the substance, not the total pressure of the entire system.
The compound must be stable at the temperature of sublimation. Sometimes this problem can be overcome by running the sublimation under reduced pressure (using a vacuum pump). It does not work for liquids, obviously, because liquids do not sublime. Thus the sublimation must be reasonably fast well below the melting point. Finally sublimation is not generally useful as a fractional technique -- so it's not going to work well for separating isomers that have only slightly different vapor pressures.
