How can you isolate/purify potassium?
What are the methods for isolating and purifying potassium? And what can potassium be derived from?
Answer:
Metallic potassium was first isolated by Sir Humphry Davy in 1807 through the electrolysis of molten caustic potash (KOH).
Direct electrolytic methods are not commercially viable for potassium, Sir Humphrey Davy notwithstanding. Potassium is made commercially by reduction of KCl with sodium. KCl is a native ore (sylvite, found in Utah) but there are also mixed ores such as KMgCl3 which is found in Canada. It's pretty easy to separate K from Mg.
