What are underwaer for?

Answer:
It has only been within the last eighty years or so that people in the Western world have been able to change their clothes on a daily basis. Prior to that, many average people had two sets of clothes, older sturdier ones to wear for everyday and somewhat nicer ones to wear to church.

Underwear meant that the clothing closest to the parts of the body that sweated the most would be changed daily, or at least more frequently.

Underwear protects your outer garments from sebum and other secretions, and from staining.
um, I think to protect your... you know... from things like germs. Or maybe they were made to protect you from dirty things, but i'll generally think underwear would have been fashion for the private parts.
