Chemical or Physical Change?
Identify each of the following as a chemical or physical change. Briefly explain your answer.
1) Rusting Nail
2) Test Tube that shatters when heated
3) stack of papers shredded in a shredder
4) milk sours in the carton
5) silverware tarnishing
Answer:
a chemical-the atoms have rearranged to form rust
b physical-only the shape is changed but the chemical composition is still the same
c physical-only the shape has changed and what it's made or how it's arranged on molecular terms
d chemical-the product has changed in to something else therefore making it a new substance
e chemical-same as rusting nail i would guess-two things have come together and they have rearranged their atoms between them to make something different
Remember the law of conservation of mass nothing can be created or destroyed. There fore in chemical reactions the way in which the molecules are arranged are changed.
