Can matches light without the presence of oxygen?
Answer:
A match will not light in an atmosphere without oxygen to support combustion. However, it may be possible to put an oxidixer into the match head to help it to burn for a little bit, though oxidizers are a class of rather reactive chemicals and that may not be a good idea. There is a list of some on the wikipedia page that I included a link to.
A match wouldn't light because combustion needs oxygen.
no you need oxygen to make a fire
They light up but they cannot remain lit unless there is oxygen. The little pyrotechnical compound on top of the match uses potassium chlorate as an oxidizer so it gets its oxygen from there. But once it is all spent the wooden stick cannot burn any further without oxygen. The match composition is not too difficult to make. Imagine the whole match covered with the match composition. It would burn without any oxygen. But just impregnating the match with an oxidizer solely would not work very well. Potassium chlorate is one example of an oxidizer. Potassium nitrate is another.
