Where do tears come from?

i know we can cry when we are happy or sad, but how are tears made?

Answer:
Tears are a liquid produced by the body's process of lacrimation to clean and lubricate the eyes.

Physiology
In humans, the tear film coating the eye has three distinct layers:

The mucous layer contains mucin secreted by the conjunctival goblet cells. The inner-most layer of the tear film, it coats the cornea to provide a hydrophobic layer that allows for even distribution of the aqueous layer.

The aqueous layer contains water and other substances such as proteins (e.g. tear lipocalin, lactoferrin and lysozyme[1]) secreted by the glands of Kraus and Wolfring and the lacrimal gland.

The lipid layer contains oils secreted by the Meibomian glands. The outer-most layer of the tear film, it coats the aqueous layer to provide a hydrophobic barrier that retards evaporation.
One lacrimal gland is located above and beside each eye, behind the upper eyelid. The lacrimal glands secrete lacrimal fluid which flows through lacrimal ducts into the space between the eyeball and lids. When the eyes blink the lacrimal fluid is spread across the surface of the eye.

Lacrimal fluid gathers in the lacrimal lake, then flows via the puncta through the lacrimal canaliculi at the inner corner of the eyelids through the nasolacrimal duct, and finally into the nasal cavity.

An excess of tears, as with strong emotion, can thus cause the nose to run.

All tears come out of the tear glands or lacrimal glands. Tears wash down from the glands and over your eyes. Some tears drain out of your eyes through the tear ducts, which are the tiny tubes that run between your eyes and nose. When you eyes fill up with tears, they drain out through the tear duct. If you are crying alot, your ducts are unable to drain them alone, so tears end up coming out of your nose through the ducts.
Tears flow from our eyes when we cry because they contain chemicals and hormones produced by our bodies.

When we become upset, our brains and bodies overreact and work overtime by producing chemicals and hormones.

Crying helps eliminate these extra chemicals that we don't need.

The chemicals and hormones disappear from our body through the form of tears. As our tears flow, they sooth our sadness or distress by withdrawing these chemical agents.

That is why many people feel calmer or more refreshed after crying--because the tears get rid of these hormones that are produced when we are sad, happy, or distressed.
lacrimal ducts in the crease of your eyes. yourbody synthesizes enzymes called lysozyme which digest polypeptide walls of bacteria. your body keeps a supply and stores it in ducts as secretes as needed. look up anatomy websites
Ffrom the heart usually.
It is the tearducts at the back of your eye. Build up of fluid is obtained within, when you cry it is the fluid washing your eye either free of dirt, to keep it moist or clean.
TEARS: One lacrimal gland is located to each eye, behind the upper eyelid. The lacrimal glands secrete lacrimal fluid which flows through the main excretory ducts into the space between the eyeball and lids. When the eyes blink the lacrimal fluid is spread across the surface of the eye. Lacrimal fluid gathers in the lacrimal lake, and is drawn into the puncta by capillary action, then flows through the lacrimal canaliculi at the inner corner of the eyelids through the nasolacrimal duct, and finally into the nasal cavity. An excess of tears, as with strong emotion, can thus cause the nose to run.

Tears normally generically initiate from something that moves you emotionally sad/happy/anger .

Worst type of Tears initiation is heartbreak!!!!!

People try to stay away from that type.

tears come from the tear ducts located above our eyes.Close to the brows..i think they are produced when stimulated by a hormone.
Tears are a liquid produced by the body's process of lacrimation to clean and lubricate the eyes. The word lacrimation may also be used in a medical or literary sense to refer to crying.
Tears is a watery secretion of the lacrimal glands just above the eye ball.
when we cry isn't it sometimes to do with our eyes cleaning themseves. like when they are dry. our eyes just know!

Tears come from the tear glands.
God made tears.
jem has got it right it's hormones but why do we cry when we are happy?
Tears are when you catch your clothing on a sharp object, post barbed wire or the like. This can also be known as a rip.
The most common type of tear is an L shape rip in your britches.
Somtimes you can get a double whammy! You catch your trousers on barbed wire and at the same time the barbs dig in to your skin. This gives a tear in your trousers and causes a flood of tears in youe eyes!!!!!!!!
tearducts, which are at d corner of our eyes
usually they come direct from 10 downing st
tears are produced for several reasons - to protect the eye (when a foreign object goes into the eye), but also to express emotion, whether laughing very hard, or from a broken heart or a sad event. The complicated chemical explanation for tear production was given by another user above, but I would have thought that different hormones and neurotransmitters would trigger the production, depending on the reason for the tears.

Tears are just one manifestation of the close interplay between the emotions, mind, and the physical body, which is fascinating (to me anyway).
