Need help on this problem??

when analyzing product using TLC,(thin-layer chromatography) why is it helpful to spot the reactant on the same plate as the product. why not spot just the product?

Answer:
easy.
so you can see the difference between the two. if the difference in Rf is small, you will never be sure what u have (product or starting material, or both) , unless they are on the same plate. in extreme cases u actually make 3 spots- one for the starting material, one for the product and then a third one, on which you introduce both.
