Has there been much progress in the production and cost reduction of cellulosic ethanol?

Answer:
If there has, it's been in designer bugs; which is why it's been a slow process. It takes time to grow these things, select for them and then test them. A bigger push for this kind of diversification should have happened earlier as now, the push is mostly towards corn based ethanol. The market will be closer to saturation before meaningful diversification of source material becomes a reality. Who knows, this may be helpful in reducing subsidies while providing another income stream for farmers lending to stability. Follow the money, and you'll find most everything you want to know behind the scenes on this.
