The Peridic Table Of Elements?

Answer:
Elements may be arranged from lightest (hydrogen) to heaviest (lead, etc.) but it was discovered that as the weight grew, the number of protons (neglecting neutrons) also grew. As the number of protons grew, the number of electrons orbiting the atoms grew. Because there are specific limits to the number of electrons that can orbit an atom in a series of 'shells' surrounding the atoms, chemical reactions between atoms were discovered to depend on whether shells had a complete complement of electrons. Atoms with similar incomplete shells were discovered to support similar chemical reactions and these were collected into families (such as the halogen family) which could be displayed in vertical columns of a 'periodic' table (the shell configurations appear periodically in the series of all atoms). The noble gas family (for example) have complete shells and do not react with other atoms.
