Huckel's rule?

In Huckel's 4n+2 rule for deciding aromaticity, what does the n stand for ?? and which of the electrons do we have to add up for the other side of the equation (eg how do we know what the no. of electrons in the aromatic ring is ? )

n stands for the number of pi-electrons. pi-electrons are these that take part of a double (or triple ) bond. unshared electron pairs ( on O, or N, or S) since they occupy p-orbitals, which can be parallel to the pi-orbitals, (all perpendicular to the plane of the ring) could also be part of the pi-electron system.
in short-one double bond-2 pi-electrons. free lone pairs on O and N (if N not tertiary) -also.
