What is the relation between covalent bond, electronegativity and ionic bond?

please give me brief answer .no wikepedia.

Answer:
If the electronegativities of the two reacting species are similar they will share the electrons and so have a covalent bond. ( this is usually between two non-metals)
If they are vastly different the electrons will flow to the species with the greater pull, therefor forming ions and an ionic bond. (usually between a metal and a non-metal.)
higher the difference between electronegativity, higher will be the strenth of ionic bond & lower will be the strengyh of covelent bond.
Well i hope i can atleast try to answer your question, because we have been studying about it for last 2 months. I am in grade 11.
Covalent bond is the bond formed by the mutual sharing of electrons.
Electronegativity is the affinity of atoms to attract electrons towards themselves.
Ionic bond, also known as electrovalent bond is the bond formed by the transference of electrons from one atom to another.

Now, for an ionic bond to form, the electronegativity difference should be high. It should be more than 2.0...I guess...
So for a covalent bond to be formed, the electronegativity of the two atoems should be almost equal or similar, because if not then the atom with higher electronegativity will take away the atom form the lower electronegativity one and result in the formation of an ionic bond!
Electronegativity is the relative measure of the electron attracting power of an atom when it is in a chemical bond. An atom with a high electronegativity is likely to gain an electron from an atom with a low electronegativity and form an ionic bond. A covalent bond is more likely to occur when a low difference in electronegativity exists. The relative difference in electronegativity can therefore be used to predict whether an ionic (electrovalent) bondor a covalent bond will occur.
Covalent bond is formed when two or more similar or different atom SHARE valance electron between them, so that each atom gets the octet or duplet electron arrangement. the product of sharing between atom is called neutral molecule. the forces between molecules are Van Der Waals forces that are weak.

Ionic bond is formed between atoms of metal elements that RELEASE / ACCEPT electrons to atom of non metal elements. atoms of elements that release the electron from positive ions and atoms that receive the electron negative ions to attain a stable arrangement. the positive ions and negative ions are attracted to another with strong electrostatic forces. the attractive forces between the ions called ionic bond.

when going down the periodic table, or when going down the group of metal elements the electronegativity of the element decrease and it cause the element easy to donate electron to non-metal element then the ionic bond formed.

hope my answer good enough for you..
