Balance redox reaction?? I've got some problem with this: PbO2 + S2O3-2 -----> PbO + SO3-2?
I have to found if is acid or basic ambient.
Answer:
WE balance by half-reaction method :
(PbO2 + 2H+ + 2e- >> PbO + H2O) x2
S2O32- + 3H2O >> 2SO32- + 6H+ + 4e-
______________________________...
2 PbO2 + 4H+ + 4e- >> 2 PbO + 2H2O
S2O32- + 6H2O >> 2 SO32- + 6H+ + 4e-
2PbO2 + S2O32- + H2O >> 2PbO + 2SO32- + 2H+
This is the balanced equation in acid ambient.
If the reaction occurs in basic ambient we add 2 OH- on the left and on the right side :
2PbO2 + S2O32- + 2OH- >> 2PbO + 2 S2O32- + H2O
Note : we can not know if the reaction occurs in acid or in basic ambient balancing the reaction : we must know the ambient before
3PbO2 + S2O3-2 ------->3PbO + 2SO3-2
