How do I dilute a 50% NaOH solution to a 3 molar solution?

Flinn Scientific sells bottles of 500 ml of 50% NaOH solution. I need to dilute a bottle to a 3 molar solution. How do I do it?

Answer:
NaOH MW = 40g/mole

50% NaOH is usually given as 50 g/100 ml soution

so 50g/100ml = 50 g/0.1L * mole/40g = 12.5 moles/L

so you need 3 M solution out of a 12.5 M solution

So take 12.5moles/L*xml = 3moles ==> x = 240 ml

take 240 ml of 12.5 M or 50% NaOH and dissolve to 1000 ml and you will have 3M NaOH

(0.240 L) (12.5 moles / L) = 3 moles / L = 3M NaOH
