benzene is a common hydrogen , which is widely used as a solvent. Benzene is 92.3 % carbon and 7.7% hydrogen.

a) What is the empirical formula for benzene ?

b) From another experiment, the molecular mass of benze was determined to be 78.0 grams per mole. what is the molecular formula for benzene?

c) Write a balanced equation for the combustion of benzene.

Answer:
We consider 100 g of benzene . There are 92.3 g of C and 7.7 g of H
92.3 g / 12 g/mol = 7.7 moles of C
7.7 g / 1 g/mol = 7.7 moles of C
The ratio between C and H is 1 : 1 so the empirical formula is CH

b) Mass of the empirical formula = 12 + 1 = 13
78.0 / 13 = 6
The molecular formula is C6H6

c) 2 C6H6 + 15 O2 >> 12CO2 + 6H2O
a) empirical formula is CH
b) molecular formula is C6H6
c)balanced equation for the combustion of 1 mole of C6H6 (l) is:
C6H6 (l) + 15/2 O2 (g) --> 6CO2 (g) + 3H2O(l)
