Is it possible to make Nitromethane in the lab or at home?
nitromethane is CH3NO2, so i was thinking methane + NO2?

YES. No, it is not especially hard to make. Your route with methane and NO2 gas is wrong though!
I wouldn't advise it though. Nitromethane is explosive and very toxic. It is easily absorbed through the skin and by inhalation.

You won't be able to make nitromethane on your own with methane and nitrogen dioxide. Nor any other route. Even distilling this compound is a dangerous undertaking.
