What is meant by Volatile Suspended Solids in wastewater treatment ?

Answer:
The sample water is filtered through a filter paper of known weight. The paper is then dried out and weighed to get the "suspended solids". Then the filter paper is heated to an elevated temperature and weighed again. The % loss of the mass is the volatile suspeded solids.
Solids are separated out of the water - this is total solids. Then the solids are heated very hot, some of that mass will be lost a gas, some will remain. The mass that remains is called fixed solids, that which is lost is called volatile solids.
