If a yellow precipitate was obtained with AgNo3, could you conclude that only Br or I is present in is present in your compound?

Yes, would be able to say that you had either Bromide or Iodide, but you wouldn't know which one, since both AgBr, and AgI are both yellow.

the yelow would be from the iodine. Bromine USUALLY turn things brown.

AgBr and AgI are both light yellow and both would precipitate out of the solution.
