What is the name of this molecule: CH3CH2CHOCH2CH2CH3?
CH3CHOCH2CH2CH3: (a) ethoxypropane (b) ethylpropoxy (c) ethylpropane (d) 2-ethoxypropane
Answer:
CH3CH2OCH2CH2CH3
is ethoxypropane a)
so CH3CH2CH2OCH2CH2CH3 is
propoxypropane c)
3-hexanol
Following the answers listed here, it would be (c) and (a).
Have we stopped naming ethers as ethers?
I would think a more appropriate name would be:
dipropyl ether
ethyl-propyl ether
Methoxy, Ethoxy and Propoxy were reserved for names which had another functional group attached to the primary chain.
Is CH3-O-CH3 named methoxy-methane? Or dimethyl ether?
My thoughts on the matter.
These substances aren't real... If it would be an ether, the formula would be: CH3CH2CH2OCH2CH2CH3. The valences at the third C aren't enough. An atom of C has 4 valences.
