Organic Chem Stuff?
1. I'm having trouble naming this compound It's a 5 member cyclic compound with 2 double bonds, 3 carbons, 1 Nitrogen, 1 Oxygen, and 3 hydrogens, the hydrogens are all attached to carbons and the nitrogen has 1 electron pair. The oxygen has 2 electron pairs.
---> about this compound I need to figure out if it's aromatic and also which of the nonbonding prs of electrons are involved in the pi electron cloud. I said it was aromatic and that the top pair of electrons on Oxygen (the ones that would be drawn within the ring) is this correct?
2. What is the product of reacting a benzene ring and a butyl chain with 2 methyl groups off the 2nd carbon and a chlorine off the 3rd. Catalyst of AlCl3 I know this is alkylation, and the Cl is cleaved off and attached to a loose H+ I just can't figure out the arrangement of the remaining atoms off the benzene ring.
Answer:
ur description of the 5 membered ring is pretty bad, i.e. it does not lead to a single structure. the positions of the N and O are not clear. not that it matters in this case.
yes, u r right, it is aromatic(6 pi-electrons) and yes, the Oxygen p-orbital is involved in the pi-electron cloud.
2.
there is only one possible product, with the Ph ring in place of the Cl,
CH3-C(CH3)2-CH(Ph)-CH3
it is 3,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-butane
wha-wha. i feel stupid.
