Do you reckon my old old school rugby top could work as a decent filter to get an acetomophen (spelling?) precipitate out of an aqueous solution (not saying what :) )

I doubt that it would be a good filter. The pores in the shirt are probably too large to filter out the crystals.
Nah, I'd just use cotton like all good addicts do.
