What is the meaning of oxidation? I am new to chemistry so any basic explanations would be appreciated.?

Please include one or two examples of oxidation

Answer:
Oxidation is simply the combination of a substance with oxygen.
air makes the item rust
oxidation hav 4 explanation
-1)increase in number of oxidation
-2)gain of oxygen
-3)loses of electron
-4)loses of hydrogen
example for explaination 2):2Mg+O2->2MgO
there is a gain of oxygen so it is oxidation.

the explaination of 3),4) is almost same as 2)...if u c there is a loses of hydrogen or electron in the equation...then u can confirm that...oxidation occur...the explaination 1)...u hav to refer it from ur teacher...it hard to explain here...
oxidation means loss of electrons. There is an easy way to remember it:
OILRIG - Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain.
There a couple of types of oxidation though.
Acc to old concept of oxidation is:
Addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen is called oxidation. e.g.
1} 2H2 + O2--------> 2H2O
2} H2S + Cl2---------> 2HCl + S
Acc. to modern concept Oxidation means:
Loss or removal of electron. This defination is more reliable e.g.
Na(s)---------------> Na+ + e-
Fe(s) ----------------> Fe+2 + 2e-
Oxidation is the gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen.
Iron reacts with the oxygen present in air to form iron oxide.
