How do you name a compound that is an alcohol and an alkene? example: CH3CH=CHCH2CH2OH?

Answer:
You don't get Alkene alcohols.
An Alkene is derived from the Dehydration of an Alcohol

CH3-CH=CH-CH2-CH2-OH when dehydrated becomes Pentene-2. CH3-CH=CH-CH2-CH3 (C5H10).
The '2' represents the double bond between Nos. 2 & 3 C's.
3-pentEnOL

It's primarily an alcohol, so the OL at the end indicates this. Also, it is secondarily an alkene, so given that it has 5 C's, it is called PentEne, not Pentane.

Lastly, the fact that it is named after its primary feature (alcohol) indicates that the C next to the -OH group is C1. Thus, the 3 in front of the name of the compound indicates that the double bond is b/t the 3rd and 4th C.

Good luck w/ orgo! It's difficult at first, but necessary info! :)
U gotta decide which gets precedence: there are 2 ways to name the above compound:

As an alcohol it would be 3-penten-1-ol or 3-pentenol

As an alkene it would be 5-hydroxy-2-pentene

Either way is fine
2 pentene alcohol
or
2-pentenol

I think the second one might be confusing, but it might be what your course prescribes. It's probably not what we'd call it in the industry in either case. Nothing ever is.
using IUPAC naming, it would be
pent-3-en-1-ol
So there are two right answers here. The first answer is the typical way of naming such compound but the last answer (previous to this one) is the now more accepted way.
pent-3-ene-1-ol
pent-3-en-1-ol

You also have to determine if the double bond is a cis or trans isomer.
