Hard chemistry question...?

In the process known as osmosis, _____ moves through a semipermeable membrane into an area of _____ concentration.
A. solute, lower solute
B. solute, higher solute
C. solvent, lower solute
D. solvent, lower solvent
E. solvent, higher solvent

Answer:
d.

unless the process is reverse osmosis in which case it would be both c and e. it is never a nor b.

the idea here is this. 1) solvent dissolves in the membrane then transfers through it. and 2) there is a driving force due to lower solvent concentration. the solvent goes from higher solvent concentration to lower solvent concentration unless some other driving force causes the direction to change. such as pressure as in reverse osmosis.
D. Solvent, lower solvent.
E. solvent, higher solvent

Could also be B under some circumstances
