Why in the state of Indiana do we have to take chemistry in high school?
Answer:
I'm sorry you're not enjoying your chemistry class. There's a difference between not liking the subject because of its content and not liking it because of the way it's delivered. Maybe your textbook doesn't do a good job of presenting the material, or your teacher is a boring lecturer, or you don't understand the material yet. Or you didn't get to do many hands-on labs, or you were afraid that something was goning to blow up. That's different from writing off the whole subject as being pointless.
Chemistry is about the building blocks of the entire universe, and of life itself. It's a very interesting subject, if you give it a chance.
Even if you don't like chemistry, you can at least appreciate the value of those who do. Imagine a world in which there are no medicines, because there are no chemists who can figure out how to mix the doses of the different components of the drugs you need to take in order to save your life?
If scientists couldn't understand the chemistry behind why there was a hole in the ozone layer of our atmosphere, they couldn't have warned people to stop using CFC's.
Chemists play a vital role in our society, whether you choose to be one yourself some day or not. You can at least learn to appreciate those who do like chemistry.
And I'm not a chemist. It was my worst subject in high school (although I loved biology and physics, and went on to get a degree in physics in college.) I didn't 'love' chemistry when I took it in high school, but I certainly have an appreciation for it, and I value those who do choose to be chemists.
The reason you have to take chemistry in high school is to get an appreciation for the subject, and so that some people (not everyone, obviously) can choose to go on and study more chemistry later on. You're given a taste of many new subjects in high school, and if they weren't required, you'd be less likely to try something new.
I hope this helps.
so you can learn how to make bathtub meth one day
It makes most normal people smarter.
how are you ever going to pappys still after he dies in a fishin accident?
You are required to take chemistry in every state..I just finished it and thank God it's over...
it is pointless crap you will probably never use again but they have to find something to fill the day and teaching you useful skills doesn't make sense to the government.
I think the true answer is that the education system hasn't given up on you yet, even if you sound as if you've given up on yourself. Ya know, junior, one of these days you might like to pursue a higher degree and make something of yourself...
States have specific guidelines of classes that must be taken, along with the electives. Do as well as you can - even if you don't like the class - since your focus hopefully is college...and you want great grades in HS to have more college choices in the future.
It teaches you to think and opens you up to the world of chemistry to boot.
All part of making you more well-rounded and less ignorant.
Oh yee of little knowledge----in one form or another you use chemistry EVERY SINGLE DAY. don't believe me? Make a cake or brownies or cook ANYTHING---you add ingredients---that's CHEMISTRY... you add dish soap to water to wash dishes---believe it or NOT, that's chemistry. You bleach your hair---you mix the color solutions --yep, that's chemistry... oh yeah and chemistry is a REQUIRED COURSE in every single high school in the country---so good luck getting out of taking it. Hey, you could surprise yourself and actually LEARN something!! Don't be so negative...
You are probably right. (I'm a chemistry teacher by the way).
Some students will use it, though, and use it a lot. It is an important topic, and a lot of people really need it. But...I don't think it's for everybody. If it's not for someone, I don't think they should be taking it.
Probably the reason that you have to take it is that your state legislators down in Indianapolis and your State Department of Education bigwigs down in Indianapolis decided that that's what students in Indiana should do. Never mind the fact that those dorkballs never took the course themselves and don't know squat about education. You can sure bet it wasn't your chemistry teacher's idea to have all students take it! I have a few students signed up for my class next year (I'm in Ohio) and they don't have what it takes to succeed in the class and they aren't going to do the work so I don't think they should be in it. They should take other classes more related to what they will be doing for a living when they are out of school. If it was up to the teachers, we would place the students in the classes they'd be most appropriately matched to.
Try not to be too hard on your school's policies. If you look at all the stupid decisions that are handed down and forced upon the minions, they can be tracked back to either a congressman or a lawyer or both.
Oh, and by the way, in case you hadn't noticed, there in Indiana, your state legislature is controlled by conservative republicans. Until that's changed, schools will have to follow stupid rules that are a feeble attempt to "raise standards" while having their funding repeatedly cut. You have to take chemistry because your state legislators are "raising the standards" for education. Hooray. Good for you.
Have a nice year.
Oh, and by the way, I'm reading on here several people saying that it's required in every state. Not true. States will all have certain requirements, such as certain number of lab science courses, but not every state requires chemistry. Ohio still does not, but it will, in a few years, require students to have 3 lab courses, but chemistry does not have to be one of the three.
In my opinion, chemistry should not be a required course for every student. If it was, we'd have to water it down so everyone could have a chance at passing. I'm against watering down.
it's not just in your state. every high school around the world has chemistry subject.
because the indiana school legilature is corrupt and unjust and just wants to charge you more money in book rentals for a class that you couldnt possibly use
I agree with you!! I think you should drop the class because it is pointless. In fact, all of school is pointless crap that you will never use again. I think you ought to drop out of school completely and get a job. Live on your own and pay your own bills. Get up at the crack of noon and never again be in a position where some one makes you do pointless crap.
Jeez kid, take the class and stop complaining! Everybody, everywhere has to engage in activities they might (wrongly) think are pointless crap. In fact, you get to do this your whole life, so get used to it. Just be thankful that a small percentage of the population are professional chemists and work to keep your drinking water clean, your food pure, your medicines effective and your clothing comfortable. Even in Indiana, you're living a life that is rich beyond the wildest dreams of most people who have ever lived.
Stop whining and be appreciative for the tremedous good fortune that you have. In many past years, you'd already be dead. Shoot, maybe life as a whole is pointless crap. What will you do then?
