Simplest question in world in chem.?
When the liquids acquires the shape of the container ..
why their volume is less than that of the container...??
give a good answer..all the best...im able to understand all terms...
thanx
Answer:
REASON IS ALWAYS SURFACE TENSION
adhesive and cohesive forces exist....
LESS THAN 90---------VOLUME LESS(WATER)
MORE THAN 90 -------volume more (MERCURY)
=============================
ur question is a bit confusing as it has two meanings about the volume of the container is it the inner volume ie capacity or the whole volume. If it is the whole volume then the answer is simple because the volume of material of the container will also be included the volume of container is more.
But if its the first case then its the adhesive force b/w the container and water which exists and when the water is taken out then the adhesive forces are gone and only cohersive forces exist which decrease the volume of water
Because of surface tension AND not all fluids have a volume less than that of the container.
Those having an acute contact angle occupy less volume
90 degrees -> same
Obtuse -> more (Mercury)
The molecules of liquids are arranged less tightly than those of solids but more closely than those of gases. In other words, the molecules in a liquid are arranged tighter and more orderly than in a gas, but less orderly than in a solid.
For example, a liter of liquid will not expand to fill a two-liter container, but a liter of gas will. So, the reason is actually the manner in which the molecules are arranged.
