What kind of solids would be expected to be soluble in liquid mercury?
1. molecular solids (molecular compounds)
2. ionic solids (ionic compounds)
3. network solids
4. metallic solids (metals)
choose all that apply
Answer:
I would have to say Metallic solids. These are referred to as amalgams. Sodium amalgam is a common reagent in organic synthesis. Although mercury itself is sparingly soluble in some organic solvents and water, it most likely wont bring organics into solution (so choice 1 is out). Again liquid mercury is in the 0 oxidation state and probably wont dissolve ionic structures either.
