Is Lye a base or an acid?

Is Lye a base or an acid? Also is alcohol a base or acid?

Answer:
Lye could be soda or potash - but both of these are bases.

Alcohol can behave as a very weak acid or base, but this requires a strong base or a group 1 metal (e.g. sodium or potassium) to be added, or the addition of a strong acid respectively.
Lye is a base. I don't know about alcohol.
NaOH or Lye is a strong base.
Alcohol is a weak base.

Strong bases completely ionize in water.
Weak bases partially ionize.
lye is base...

i think alcohol is neutral, not sure about it though
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), or LYE...is an Alkaline
lye, NaOH, is extremely basic. alcohol is weakly basic
most of the time, acids are shown with the hydrogen ion, and bases are shown with the hydroxyl ion (the OH radical). Anything that has (OH) like alcohol is showing off that hydroxyl ion and is a base.

Ron.
Lye (NaOH) is a base.

alcohols are weak acid (Ka ~ 10^(-17) ie even weaker than water)
