D2sp3 hybridization?
KrF4 --- yes
ICl5 --- yes
KrCl2 --- no
SF4 -- no
SeCl6 -- yes
PBr5 -- yes
IF3 -- no
can one tell me where i went wrong??
thank you advance
Answer:
Your mistake is only on PBr5. It is sp3d, not sp3d2.
d2sp3 hybridization creates six potential orbitals, enough for six single bonds or a combination of single, double or triple bonds and lone pairs to occupy six positions around the central atom.
Clearly, SeCl6 (six single) and PBr5 and ICl5 (five singles and a lone pair).
SF4 is sp3.
That brings me to Kr - I'm with you that KrCl2 is not, but wouldn't that also imply that KrF4 is not, too?
Guess I'm gonna have to brush up on hybridization.
