What should I do to dissolve hardened epoxy?

I have a defective electronic gadget I would like to repair myself. The problem is, the circuitry is in a small box filled with hardened epoxy. I am sure it is repairable. It seems the maker of this gadget wants a new one to be purchased rather than have the busted one repaired. I am afraid chipping off the hardened epoxy might destroy the gadget beyond repair. So, I think the best way is to dissolve the epoxy. But the big question is, what is the safe chemical to liquefy the hardened epoxy?

Answer:
There are whole industries built upon this question.

Epoxy resins can have a wide variation of chemical structure and composition. Different solvents would be required to remove cured or uncured epoxy resins.

You might be better off contacting a firm which specializes in this process than in experimenting on your own (which might take weeks or even months to find a suitable solvent).

You might try Tal-StripĀ® II Aircraft Coating Remover from the Bondo/Mar-Hyde Corporation. This is currently sold for about $12 to $15 per quart. Other products are available.
The thing that makes epoxy so impervious to being compromised is that it undergoes a chemical transformation when the catalyst is mixed with the resin.

But you might want to try hydrochloric acid. If that doesn't work, maybe the acid used to clean pool sides.

I doubt either will work, but they might.

Epoxy is a polymer, so you might try melting it with heat.
