Why is it necessary to grind the sample in experimenting sublimation and melting point determination?

organic chem

Answer:
When you grind a solid, you actually break its bonds with other crystal structures and leaves behind the bonds with other atoms in its own crystal structure... Since melting point is the transtion to the solid phase to the liquid phase, the grinding ensures that you consider the breaking of only the solid crystal and not an aggregate of them...

The same goes with sublimation of solid compounds.
