Total Acid Number, Total Base Number & PH?
I am working in a laboratory that deals with lubricating oil samples and water samples and I am always confused about the meanings of these terminologies.
Answer:
TAN and TBN are specific test methods (ASTM or IP) that relate to the amount of acid or alkali equivalent in the lube oil, usually expressed as mg equiv to KOH required to neutralise the acid (TAN) or equivalent to mg KOH (TBN). They are usd as a measure of the degree of oxidation of the oil (TAN) or the amount of base aditive (eg basic calcium sulphonate) available to mop up oxidation acids and fuel sulphur acids (TBN).
pH is only effective as a measure of hydrogen activity in aqueous media, and really doesn't apply to lubricating oil systems.
