Answer:
1) Because he is approaching arguably the most sacred record in baseball, maybe in all of American sports.
2) Because he has made himself out to be unlikable on all levels. He has made a concerted effort to change recently, but it is all show and most people know this.
3) Because he has (most likely) lied about it. This semi-fact seperates him from Jason Giambi, who has recently been truthful.
4) It has nothing to do with race. People generally like the man who he is about to approach, Hank Aaron (who took it from Babe Ruth) and he is black.
I don't know much about baseball, but if he took steroids then I am ashamed we have made him famous.
