Something in Chem lab that i'm curious about.?

Today I did a lab using Mg and we had to use glass wool to clean the Mg. Why do you need to clean the Mg strips before using them?

Answer:
Mg forms a protective oxidized barrier when exposed to oxygen, much like aluminum does. To react best, this must be removed or lessened.
in order to clean off the coating of magnesium oxide that forms when magnesium is exposed to air
the glass wool cleans all of the nooks and crannies of the strip of the metal. reactions always go forward more efficiently, quickly, and completely when the greatest surface area is exposed. the mg froms a protective cocoon of magnesium oxide when exposed to air. the glass wool strips all or most of that coating to facilitate the reaction
