Solubility of Oxides and hydroxides?
I thought only Sodium, Ammonium and Potassium hydroxides were soluble. Why is it that Calcium Hydroxide is a solution (limewater)?
Answer:
Calcium hydroxide is not as soluble as the others but it dissolves enough to give an alkaline solution (limewater). In general group 1 hydroxides are soluble and group 2 are case-dependent. There are a handful of other soluble metal hydroxides around the periodic table but the rest are mostly insoluble. One reason is because when you increase the charge on the metal ion, it becomes favorable for the hydroxides to dehydrate to oxides which have very high ionic lattice energies because the O(2-) and the metal ions have strong attractions.
