Separating a mixture of salt and water?
Answer:
when you mix salt and water, it will produce a homogeneous mixture and you can separate it by evaporating the mixture...
Boil it? Water will evaporate??
dehydration via evaporation
progressively whiter residue crystalline structure
evaporation. Put the mixture over the flame and the water will evaporate leaving behind solid crystalline salt as residue.
AIM : to separate water and salt.
ITEMS REQUIRED : vessel, salt, water, eyes for watching, boiling vessel, stove, match box..!
PROCEEDURE : add salt and water into the boiling vessel. Place the vessel on the stove and ignite it.
OBSERVATION : after 10-15 minutes the water starts boiling and you will observe the water decreasing in the pan....!
RESULT : salt particles are found on the bottom of the vessel......!
As you use the word 'separating' in your question, I assume you wish to recover both the salt and the water at the end of the process. To do this you need to use a process known as distillation. Heat the solution in a flask until it boils. The water will evaporate and leave the salt behind. Pass the water vapour through a condenser (a glass tube that has a jacket of cold water surrounding it). The water vapour will condense back to liquid and drip into a container. Take care that you do not boil the flask dry or it will crack. When there is only a little liquid left in the flask, stop heating and allow the remaining water to evaporate naturally in a warm draughty place.
