Pure water is a very poor conductor of electricity but a dilute solution of ammonia in water is a better one?
Answer:
Ammonia reacts with water forming Ammonium hydroxide.
NH3 + H2O ----> NH4OH
now NH4OH is a weak base, & it ionizes partly in aq. soln as follows:
NH4OH <==> NH4(+) + OH(-)
these ions are responsible for the passage of electricity through soln.
Pure water itself is a very weak electrolyte, only a few molecules of water dissociates as:
H2O <==> H(+) + OH(-)
this small quantity of ions are not sufficient to make water a good conductor of electricity. Thus pure water does not conduct electricity to a significant amount.
Ammonia reacts with water to a small extent, forming ions, which help carry current:
NH3 + H2O <-------> (NH4)+ + OH-
"Pure" water contains very much fewer ions.
pure water has no ion or impurities to carry the electrical charges.
pure water is the best conductor but it is very hard to get pure water because of all the impurities in it nowadays. now it is polutted water or drinking water from a treatment site which is still very unpure
