Diamagnetic complexes of cobalt likeCo(NH3)6 3+orangeyellowwhile paramagneticcomplexeslike... blue.?

this question is taken from J.E.Huheey 3rd edition chapter 9 question 9.2.

Answer:
The main difference is that the number of unpaired electrons. The more the number of electrons are unpaired, there is an absorption at a lower frequency. So most of the species with 5 unpaired electrons (Mg+2 and Fe+3) are yellow in colour. The less number of unpaired electrons makes the complexes blue-green. Also, the absorbing of the complex is dependent on the nature and basicity of the ligand.
