Which of the following type of materials will react with sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3 to produce a gas?

a) acids
b) bases
c) salts
d) all of them

Answer:
The answer is acids...

You can prove this to yourself at home..take some baking soda (which is sodium bicarbonate), you probably have some in the fridge, put a tablespoon or two of it in a cup (do this in the kitchen sink or you'll make a mess), pour some vinegar (which is a weak acid known as acetic acid) into it and watch it fizzle up and over the brim of the cup. The end result of the chemical reaction produces sodium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide gas. Hope that helps.
d
Acids

Example:

NaHCO3 + HCl --> NaCl + H2O + CO2
a)..acids. (used as an Antacid..the CO2 evolved by reaction with HCl in the stomach makes you 'Burp' !!).
The reaction also neutralises the acidity).
Only acids will react with NaHCO3 to produce CO2 gas.
