How to preserve a sample of water if you r going to test for sulfur in it later on?

the sample of water will be 100ml from a river. i just need to know how to preserve it for a long time and still get good results if i am looking for sulfur in that water. i know i have to add hcl or something but i am not sure. plz help!

Answer:
I don't know the exact methodology for testing sulfur; however, sulfur will probably escape the water as hydrogen sulfide gas eventually if a preservative is not added. Hydrogen sulfide is an acid compound, so one needs to add base to the solution to keep the sulfur ions from escaping by forming a gas. Sodium or Potassium hydroxide can be used. In fact, baking soda will also make a solution alkaline, and is a buffer as well. A buffer will keep the solution alkaline even if acid forms.I would do some research and see how the EPA preforms water tests for sulfur.
How are you going to test for sulfur? Is it elemental sulfur or in some other form?
The short answer is to just keep it in a tightly closed container.
