How do i find the number of valence electrons in an atom?

im somewhat new to chemistry.so please explain if u can

Answer:
Subtract the atomic number of the next smallest noble gas.
chemistry, valence electrons are the electrons contained in the outermost, or valence, electron shell of an atom. Valence electrons are important in determining how an element reacts chemically with other elements: The fewer valence electrons an atom holds, the less stable it becomes and the more likely it is to react.

The number of valence electrons an element has is determined by its periodic table group (vertical column) in which the sup element is categorized. With the exception of groups 3–12 (transition metals), the number within the unit's place identifies how many valence electrons are contained within the elements listed under that particular column.
Look at the Periodic Table of Elements.
The Atomic Number tells you how many electrons are in the atom.
The electrons are in 'Orbit' around the Nucleus (The Protons and Neutrons that make up the Atomic Mass Number).
The electrons are contained in 'Energy Shells' and each shell has a maxinmum number of electrons.

It's the Outer shell that holds the Valence Electrons.
Also in the Periodic Table, each Element has it's Atomic Number (Number of Protons (& if it's a stable element, the same number of electrons).
There is also a number 1, 2, 3, 4... etc. This is the number of Valence electrons of the Element listed.
In some cases, there are numbers like.. 2,3, or 3,6 etc.. meaning that the element has up to 3 or 6 valence electrons ..etc, available.
It is determined by the periodic table.

on top.
they group it on top.
