Why is it necessary to equilibrate the developing chamber before chromatography?

For most forms of paper or thin layer chromatography, if the chamber is not equilibrated before the chromatography is performed, the more volatile components of the mobile phase will evaporate into the chamber before the sample can move.
This will result in a change in the composition of the mobile phase and lead to less accurate Rf values and less reproducible results. For the same reason, after the specimen is spotted on the plate at the origin, any solvent used must be dried before the chromatography is started.
