For the following pair of substances, determine which has the larger molar entropy at 298 K:
NO2(g) or N2O4(g).

Also state the main reason for the difference

Answer:
N2O4

Entropy is another word for randomness. A gas has more entropy than a liquid, etc.

In this case polarity is the issue. NO2 is a polar molecule. It is bent as seen on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/nitrogen_di... That means it is polar. N2O4 is none polar. As seen on this site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/dinitrogen_... is non-polar, so it isn't as crazy.

So N2O4 (g) has a larger molar entropy.
