Can you please classify each of the following compunds as ionic or covalent and why, and give its name?
Na2SO4
N2O
F2
PCl5
CF4
Answer:
There's a general rule for determing whether a compound contains Ionic or covalent bonds. Typically only first and 2nd column elements when bonded to 16 & 17 column elements.
FeCl3 - all bonds are covalent covalent
Na2SO4 - Na-O bonds are Ionic and the S-O bonds are covalent.
N2O - All covalent bonds
F2 - Covalent bond
PCl5 - All covalent bonds
CF4 - All covalent bonds - Electronegativity difference between C and F is 1.5. Typically a bond is only ionic if the difference is greater then 1.6. Some guy came up with this scale.
FeCl3 - Iron(III) chloride, or ferric chloride, ionic salt of dissolved rust, solubility in water.
Na2SO4 - Sodium sulfate - ionic salt of sulfuric acid, solubility in water.
N2O - Dinitrogen oxide - or nitrous oxide - covalent shared electrons in bonds, a gas a room temperature.
F2 - Fluorine, covalent - shared electrons, gas a room temperature.
PCl5 - Phosphorous pentachloride, shared electrons - covalent, solubility in benzene.
CF4 - Carbon tetrafluoride - shared electrons - covalent, solubility in nonpolar solvents.
