Reaction of sodium hydroxide with sugars?

I have read that aqueous NaOH reacts with some sugars to produce carbon monoxide. What sugars are these and what would the reaction equation be?

Answer:
Sulfuric acid on sugar is a more interesting reaction. If you use concentrated H2SO4 and pour it o sucrose, it dehydrates it. Steam comes off and carbon is left.
