Isotope confusion?

I know what a isotope is. But how can original element be isotopes? For example, actinide is the stablest isotope-how can it be an isotope while it's itself?

Answer:
Elements are isotopes because of differences
in the nucleus that dont effect their chemical
properties

You can't have an isotope with 1 extra proton
because that would require 1 extra electron
and that would be another element with different
chemical properties

You can however have an isotope with extra neutrons
effecting its mass but not its chemical properties
The original element you refer to is simply the mean or most common isotope.
