What the hell is ELECTROLYSIS?

I have to do this spectra stuff for science and i have to write a brief report on what ELECTROLYSIS is. can some one help cause i suck at science and i cnt understand all the sciency stuff. =|

Answer:
In chemistry and manufacturing, electrolysis is a method of separating bonded elements and compounds by passing an electric current through them. This can be seen in isolating copper compound from its ore.

It is process by which electric current is passed through a substance to effect a chemical change. The chemical change is one in which the substance loses or gains an electron (oxidation or reduction). The process is carried out in an electrolytic cell (q.v.), an apparatus consisting of positive and negative electrodes held apart and dipped into a solution

Would be too long to put here, but check this page:

It may be easier to understand if I break the word up into two parts. Electro- quite obviously has to do with electricity, while -lysis means to break something up. When put together, the word electrolysis means to use electricity to break up the chemical components of a molecule or substance.

The process is commonly used in high school experiments to break water up into its two components, hydrogen and oxygen. When an electrical current is zapped through water, those two gases are released.
