What is the purpose of sulfuric acid in nitration of bromobenzene?

Answer:
When you mix H2SO4 and HNO3 you form a nitronium ion (NO2 with a positive charge on the N). This is because H2SO4 is a strong acid and readily donates a proton to HNO3 (HNO3 actually is acting as a base when mixed with H2SO4). Once you have a nitronium ion it readily reacts with the ring of bromobenzene. Thayss D mentioned that H2SO4 is a catalyst. It is not. It is used in a stoichiometric amount. Hope this helps.
