I can tell myself because I am over sensitive to it. I get a certain feeling that is creepy and start coughing.
The particle board and chip board also are full of it. I cut one of those and cough for three days even with a mask.
Too many years of doing interior wood finish.
Use can use a thing called a Draeger Guage. This pumps the air thru a glass tube filled with reagent that changes colour when exposed to the chemical being measured( You have different tubes for different chemicals) Formaldehyde may be present in particle board as it is a component of the resin binding it all together but not in sawn timber.
It is probably possible to have a professional to come and take measurements for you.
