What are the uses of effervescent granulated salt?

That sounds like the same thing as smelling salts to me, and those were historically used to revive a person after they passed out of fainted.
Like Sodium Bicarb in "Alkaseltzer", "Pop Rocks", and "Fizzies" from the 60's??
